Mission

The Present Crisis This campaign exists because members of Britain's Christian community are deeply concerned by the threat posed to the whole of God's creation by human-induced global warming.

Our Mandate As people of God, we have responsibility for the gift of His creation. We are called to act as persons-in-community with all peoples, with future generations, with all living things, and with the whole earth. Second, authorised by our communities and allied organisations, we undertake to initiate and sustain the campaign we call 'Operation Noah' to address the environmental crisis associated with global warming.

Vision of Operation Noah To avert the gravest consequences of global warming, we believe that Britain, with humanity as a whole, must embark on a radical transformation. We must urgently move away from irresponsible lifestyles based on fossil fuel emissions, the boundless consumption of goods and services, and the exploitation of people, resources and sinks. Based on Christ's life of simplicity and humility, we call for Britain's churches and the British government to lead a radical transformation in both our culture and our economic systems towards simpler, liveable and supportable lifestyles. Our understanding of the Scriptures, our experience of life in the Spirit, and our recent social history lead us to believe that sustainable lifestyles:

  • protect all of God's creation
  • lead to happiness, well-being and community cohesion, and
  • ensure greater social, economic and political justice.

Focus of Our Mission We see the transformation of Britain's economy and of individual lifestyles as vital to achieving this vision. Operation Noah will confront and disarm the delusion that the earth's resources are infinite; that there is no limit to the earth's sinks; that economic growth can therefore continue in perpetuity. We will campaign for an economy based on the finite size of our closed host ecosystem; an economy that will ensure the just, fair and sustainable distribution of the earth's gifts, resources and sinks. This not only for the people of Britain, but for people in low income countries; not just for this generation, but future generations; not just for humanity, but for all of God's creation.

Accountability In pursuing the campaign 'Operation Noah' we see ourselves as accountable for the transparent, effective and efficient use of our resources not only to our donors, supporters and volunteers, vital as they are, but also to the British public as a whole. Ultimately we are accountable before God for carrying through the mission we have all been given.

Hope for the Future We have come together in hope because we believe the gravest consequences of global warming can still be averted; that human traditions, culture, and behaviour can be transformed by the grace of God, working through focused leadership, public education and a sense of common cause.
