Disarming denial: Annual supporters' meeting 2012

Our annual supporters meeting and AGM took place on Saturday 23rd June at the Wesley Memorial Church in Oxford. It was a great success. After prayers and an introduction by our chair Isabel Carter, Bishop David Atkinson brought us up to date on the very encouraging way in which the Ash Wednesday Declaration had been received and supported by practically all Christian denominations and addressed us on the subject of 'climate change and the purposes of God'. Mark Letcher, our vice-chair, followed with a fascinating talk on the very relevant subject of the denial of climate change and how we need new ideas in communicating climate change. He explained how each individual has his own framework within which we judge different subjects and the work that had been done analysing this. His point was that if we are to get through to people we are going to have to be more sophisticated in the manner in which we get our message over. The well-known comedian Paul Kerensa then demonstrated how it was possible to put across our message in terms of comedy. It was something we’d asked him to do for us and we were his guinea pigs. It was brilliant and went down very well with all. He will now take his act to Greenbelt in August. We then did the more boring things connected with our AGM. We passed the accounts, elected our trustees and changed our Articles of Association so that from now on trustees will be elected for three years with one third of our trustees in each category retiring at the end of every AGM.
