How have you found the weather lately? If you’re based here in the South West, as I am, you’ve likely felt this sweltering, record-breaking heat that makes everything feel twice as difficult.

As I sit at my desk in Bristol on Wednesday 27 May – curtains drawn, fan whirring, brain fogging as the mercury hits 32°C – I’m reminded that my discomfort is very much a ‘first-world problem.’ It is a minor shadow compared to the plight of our sisters and brothers globally, facing life-threatening droughts, floods and wildfires that devastate harvests and destroy homes.

Yet from the streets of Bristol to the fields of Zambia, the message is clear:

The climate crisis is here, and it is urgent.

The Missing Link: Investment
We already have ingenious solutions to our changing climate. From the growing wind farms off our coasts to resilient farming methods in our rural counties and clean transport in our cities, the technology exists. What is missing is the investment to make it equitable, scalable – and fast!

With the folding of the Net Zero banking alliance last year, to the US pulling out of international climate agreements, we cannot simply wait for global institutions to lead the way. However, the Church is uniquely placed to turn the tide.

Globally, Church investments sit at approximately £191bn. In the UK alone, that figure reaches into the tens of billions. As Christians, we have a staggering opportunity to put our money where our faith is, transforming our accounts from static numbers into active tools for creation care.

Join the Roadshow: Bristol Cathedral, 10 June
Are you a Treasurer, PCC member, or church leader in Bristol or the South West? If so, we are inviting you to the first of our Green Investment Roadshows, this one held in the inspiring surroundings of Bristol Cathedral. Come and explore how to make your church finances work for climate, nature, and social justice.

Hear from ethical leaders including Triodos Bank, Ethex, Energise Africa, and the Quakers, and join specialised workshops with JustMoney Movement, Operation Noah and Hope for the Future on the challenges and opportunities around moving church capital for both financial and environmental gain. It’s also a great opportunity to connect with fellow stewards from churches and christian bodies across the region over a shared lunch.

Let’s move beyond the ‘brain fog’ of the climate crisis and into a season of clear-headed, faithful action. We have the resources – let’s use them to bring hope.
