With the UK in the grip of a heatwave, one might think there would be growing political consensus around investing in climate solutions and decarbonising our economy. Yet another influential figure – in this case, former Prime Minister Sir Tony Blair – yesterday attacked net zero and called for more oil and gas drilling, sounding very much like hedge fund millionaire Sir Paul Marshall who we recently challenged in an open letter signed by 120+ Christian leaders.
The public overwhelmingly supports government-led decarbonisation efforts despite ongoing attempts by wealthy and influential people to get the government to reverse course. And political and economic realities continue to challenge the anti-climate action crowd, with wind and solar generating more electricity than gas worldwide in April for the first time, and many countries wary of the insecurity and price volatility of fossil fuels in the wake of the Iran war.
In our May newsletter, we look at how Christians are pushing back against the types of views held by Blair and Marshall by organising screenings of the People’s Emergency Briefing film; by endorsing our Green Investment Declaration for churches and faith groups; and by supporting our multi-city Green Investment Roadshow, with our first stop at Bristol Cathedral on 10 June.
