The Global Divestment Announcement has been postponed to 12 November 2024. This extension will allow more faith organisations to join the movement and make a powerful statement during the COP29 season. There’s still time to be a part of this important campaign.
Faith institutions worldwide will collectively announce their divestment from fossil fuels. This significant action, coordinated by Laudato Si’ Movement, Green Anglicans, Operation Noah, and the World Council of Churches, underlines a growing global commitment to tackling the climate crisis.
The announcement comes amid a backdrop of escalating concerns over the continued expansion of fossil fuels. Recent setbacks by major oil and gas companies, such as BP and Shell, highlight the industry’s failure to align with the urgent need for a just and equitable transition to renewable energy. By divesting from fossil fuel companies, faith institutions are sending a clear message that they are committed to a just and sustainable world for all.
As the world prepares for COP29, the Global Divestment Announcement aligns with the growing call for international cooperation to accelerate the transition to renewable energy and phase out fossil fuels. This announcement includes a call to sign the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty (FFNPT) which offers a framework for encouraging governements to make a transition to clean energy.
We would love to see your diocese, religious order or faith charity be part of this. Please share this opportunity with organisations you think would like to be part of this divestment announcement.
