Dear Friends,
In conversations about the climate and nature crisis, we often hear about ‘tipping points’ – and for good reason. Planetary boundaries are real, and without significant changes to the ways we eat, farm, produce our energy, and live in and with the natural world, things could spiral out of control, leading to unstoppable and catastrophic consequences.
But there are positive tipping points, too: junctures at which, for example, the cost of clean energy falls so precipitously that rapid adoption becomes inevitable. A report from the Earthshot Prize and the University of Exeter, released this month, identifies 51 solutions ‘that could trigger rapid and transformative change to repair our planet within the next five years’.
The report says that the solutions which can unlock positive tipping points will be ‘affordable, accessible and attractive’. And it identifies ‘clean electricity as the master cascade’ which unlocks ‘electric mobility, heat pumps, clean industry and clean air simultaneously’.
But while positive clean-energy tipping points have already been met in a number of global markets, power-grid constraints are still frequently a problem. And of course, many countries continue to lack the investment needed to be in the position for a positive tipping point to occur.
That’s why when we talk about faith groups investing in climate solutions, we’re not just talking about something that’s good to do – we’re talking about unlocking genuine transformation around the world: change which could have a cascading impact on people and on the future of our planet. How can we, as Christians, be part of making a positive tipping point happen?
While we each as individuals may only manage a small amount of money ourselves, Christian groups manage hundreds of billions of pounds globally. What could we do with that money?
