UK Banks are Financing the Destruction of the ‘Amazon of the Oceans’

On 2 May and again on 8 May, Operation Noah and other organisations joined a delegation from the Protect Verde Island Passage Network led by Bishop Gerry Alminaza, a Roman Catholic Bishop in the Philippines, to call on UK banks – specifically HSBC and Standard Charter – to stop financing the destruction of the ‘Amazon of the Oceans’.

Earlier this month, the think-tank Ember released a report showing that more than 40% of the world’s electricity was generated without burning fossil fuels in 2024. While the finding is worth celebrating, it’s also important to note that electricity generation, though a significant source of emissions, still only constitutes a fraction of the global total. Furthermore, planet-heating carbon dioxide emissions have risen to an all-time high, driven by a rise in global energy demand which is still outpacing the growth in renewable energy.
Responding to the Police Raid on Westminster Quaker Meeting House

Laws on protest have in the last few years been tightened, so that now police can break down a door and arrest people simply meeting to talk about a potentially disruptive protest, even when that disruption might help us wake up to the need to change our suicidal course. This is the reason that 20 police officers broke into the Westminster Quaker Meeting House on 27 March and arrested six young people who had peacefully gathered for a publicly advertised meeting to talk about how to respond to the climate and Gaza crises.
Are Electric Cars the Answer?

This is the second in a series examining some of the thorny issues related to climate and investing in a green transition. Here we look at the complexities surrounding electric cars, in light of the recent government consultation on the Zero Emission Transition.
March 2025 Newsletter

March was a busy month for Operation Noah, from our announcement that a dozen bishops from the Church of Norway were publicly opposing the proposed North Sea Rosebank oil field – which is being developed Equinor, a company majority-owned by the Norwegian government – to our Ash Wednesday ‘No Faith in Fossil Fuels’ service and prayer vigil in London (covered here by Ellen Teague of Independent Catholic News).
Switching to a Fossil-Free Bank: Easier Than You Think

Nearly every major fossil fuel company is continuing to explore for new oil and gas and is relying on banks to finance their destructive plans. With this in mind, perhaps, you’ve been convinced for some time now that you need to switch banks, yet have lingering concerns about how complex it will be to switch and how long it will take. But I’d like to assure you that it is almost certainly easier than you think!
Operation Noah Calls for Action to Tackle Planet-Heating Emissions and Restore Nature on Church Land

Christian climate charity Operation Noah is calling on UK Churches, which own approximately 1% of UK land, to be more transparent about the land they own as well as to scale up climate action in order to achieve net zero land emissions by 2030. Operation Noah’s Church land use vision, which launches today, includes seven targets – from protecting 30% of land for nature by 2030 to restoring 100% of degraded peatland by 2030. To help Churches achieve net zero land emissions by 2030, Operation Noah is also releasing a trio of resources which include examples of sustainable farming on Church land alongside encouraging Christians to sign a campaign letter to UK Church leaders.
Church of Norway Bishops Join UK Christians in Calling for North Sea Rosebank Oil Development to be Stopped

As UK Christians prepare to host a ‘No Faith in Fossil Fuels’ service and begin a 24-hour prayer vigil in Whitehall on Ash Wednesday, leaders from Norway’s national church speak out about plans to extract North Sea oil by Equinor which is majority-owned by the Norwegian government.
February 2025 Newsletter

With European security understandably dominating the headlines, it’s easy to forget, in the midst of debates about Ukraine’s future, how integral energy is to UK and European security. Relying on volatile international fossil fuel markets – especially when many of the largest fossil fuel producing countries, including Russia, are anti-democratic states – is a dangerous game.
Update on the Campaign to Stop Rosebank + 3-9 March ‘Week of Action’

We have crucial opportunity to Stop Rosebank for good. If we create enough pressure, and show the UK Government just how unpopular Rosebank is with the public, we could see – not only an end to Rosebank – but an end to all new oil and gas drilling in the UK.
